OF GOOD WORKS

I. Good Works commanded by God in His Word and not devised by
    Men.

II. The function and purpose of Good Works

        A. Good Works function as fruits and evidences of a true and lively faith.

        B. The purpose of Good Works

                1. To manifest the thankfulness of believers

                2. To strengthen the assurance of believers

                3. To edify the brethren of believers

                4. To adorn the profession of the gospel

                5. To stop the mouths of the adversaries

                6. To glorify God

III. The doing of Good Works

        A. Ultimately from the Holy Spirit

        B. Christians responsible for the diligence in "stirring up" the grace of God that is in them.

IV. The doctrine of supererogation refuted

V. Our best Good Works

        A. Cannot merit pardon of sin or eternal life

        B. Neither profit nor satisfy the debt of our former sins

        C. Fall short of our duty

        D. Are mixed with so much weakness and imperfection that they cannot endure the severity of God's judgment

VI. The sincere Good Works of those in Christ, God is pleased to
       accept.
